How important is server location for website speeds?

I was doing a trial period with Krystal for hosting a small, new, WordPress food blog with their non managed cpanel offering, specifically the Ruby tier. I was interested in a slightly better and easier UI as well as a better and (hopefully) easier way to stage the site, so I am currently in the process of switching over to a personal Onyx trial with them. I am located in the US and they had me in a US located server, but they don’t have any Onyx servers located in the US yet, so I’ll be running out of the UK. Is this a huge deal for my site speed? Support told me that it wouldn’t be, and told me about their speeds being super fast anyway, but that could certainly just be their optimism and sales pitch. What’s your take on it? TIA!
