I’ve found myself in a pretty interesting situation! I’ll try and keep this as short and clear as possible.
I’m a freelance web developer. I also do contract work for a large local marketing agency who provides website development as one of their services. I’ve been doing work for them for about 2 years. Recently, I provided a website quote to a business who also approached this marketing company for a quote. My quote was cheaper, and they want to go with me for their new website. The only reason I know about this is because the CEO of the marketing agency asked the company who they went with when they turned their quote down, and they told him they went with me.
Luckily the CEO is a pretty chill guy – he didn’t have a problem with it this time around, but he and I both agree we want to avoid this in the future. We’re just not sure how to go about it…
I could see us doing some sort of non-compete agreement.. However the only way we’ll know we’re competing is by asking the potential client specifically WHO they’ve contacted for a quote – which in my mind is not professional.
I knew this would happen at some point, but now that it HAS actually happened I’m just stuck on what to do moving forward. I love doing contract work for this company as they provide a significant amount of income for me, so I don’t want to add any tension to that relationship. Any ideas?
