Navigating poorly designed projects

What do you do when you are asked to contribute to poorly designed projects? For example, analyzing data that was not properly gathered, evaluating training outcomes that were poorly designed, or developing a survey based on content that is not well thought out.

Knowing that the results of your work – even when properly executed on your end – will likely be a waste, do you ever refuse to take on these jobs? Or do you just focus on your scope and let the client deal with the rest? Do you have any criteria for deciding one over the other?
